I woke up early the next morning, feeling soft and warm. Usually there was a jangle of nerves when I woke up, my brain ahead of my body, reminding me that there was a lot to be done. For once, I felt relaxed, still wrapped up in Paddox's hold and still feeling what we'd done the night before.
I was pleasantly sore, and I stretched, feeling the pull of muscles that hadn't been used in a while. That would take some getting used to.
In the soft morning light, Paddox looked even more like something chiseled out of marble and given life to walk among regular people, and I couldn't help but gaze at him for a bit, watching the way the dappled light played along his cheekbones and noting how his eyelashes swept his cheeks while he slept.
I reached out like I was going to touch his face and then pulled my hand back.
I was losing myself again. I was here for a reason, and it wasn't to cuddle with Tok Henderson. The only reason I was getting close to him was so he'd trust me and I could find out more about what they were doing. That was it. I wasn't here to be soft or to have feelings for him. Doing that could get me killed.
He seemed like he was sleeping soundly, knocked out from the previous night's activities, so I wiggled my way out of his hold and slipped out of bed, moving quietly.
Paddox didn't stir, and I breathed a sigh of relief.
There had to be something in his apartment that would give me some information I could use. Quietly, I moved around his bedroom, rummaging through drawers and in boxes, hoping for anything. A scrap of paper, a note with details on it. Anything that would help me do my job better.
I crept down the stairs from the loft quietly, hunting through the living room, but there was nothing. Just art and magazines and receipts for food and art supplies.
"Skylar?"
I jumped when he called my name and huffed out a breath before heading back up to him.
"Hey," I said, forcing a smile.
"Hey. Where were you?" There was something slightly vulnerable in his eyes, and I could guess what he'd thought when he'd woken up to find me gone.
"Had to pee," I lied.
That placated him, and he melted into that easy smile, sitting up just enough that he could reach out for me. "Well get back here, then. I need to say good morning properly."
I thought about insisting that I needed to leave, that I had things to do, but instead, I went over to the bed and got back in, and we passed a very nice hour just kissing and touching each other.
When he finally let me up for air, I was laughing, pushing away at his grabbing hands. “I really should get going,” I said. “I have things to do today.”
“Mm, yeah, me too,” he agreed. “Should shower first, though, don’t you think?”
I was a sweaty mess, and even though he’d cleaned me up the night before, I didn’t really feel clean.
